What size should a barn quilt be?
The best barn quilt size depends on viewing distance, available mounting space, and the amount of detail in the pattern. Small barn quilts work well indoors and on doors. Larger designs are easier to see from a road, yard, or driveway.
Common barn quilt sizes
- 10–18 inches: shelves, indoor walls, gifts, and small doors
- 20–30 inches: porches, entryways, fences, and garden buildings
- 32–40 inches: garages, sheds, and house exteriors
- 42–48 inches: barns and locations viewed from farther away
Indoor versus outdoor sizes
Indoor projects can be sized like ordinary wall art. Outdoor barn quilts generally benefit from simpler patterns and larger dimensions. Leave clearance around trim, doors, lights, gutters, and mounting hardware.
How to enlarge a pattern
Divide the desired finished size by the original pattern size, then multiply by 100. A 12-inch pattern enlarged to 36 inches has a scale factor of 300%.
Panel, frame, and paint area
The panel normally matches the finished painted size. Add twice the frame width to calculate outside dimensions. Multiply width by height and divide by 144 to estimate square feet of paintable surface.
Printing a full-size pattern
