GUIDE 2 OF 8 · PLANNING

Patterns, Sizing & Layout

Keep pattern choice, size, printing, and layout together. These decisions affect one another and should be completed before paint is opened.

Choose a pattern that will read clearlyMatch detail to size and viewing distance

Large, simple shapes remain readable from farther away. Fine divisions work best for smaller indoor projects viewed up close. Check symmetry, count the smallest regions, and consider how many masking stages the pattern requires.

Choose the finished sizeSpace, clearance, and standard sizes

Measure width and height, subtract intentional clearance, and choose a standard size that fits comfortably. A square design normally uses the smaller available dimension. Confirm that the finished panel can be moved, painted, and installed safely.

Calculate a practical size →

Resize with a scale factorConvert a master pattern to the final board

Divide the desired finished size by the original pattern size. Multiply by 100 for the print percentage. For example, a 12-inch master enlarged to 36 inches uses a 300% scale factor. When working from a grid, divide the finished size by the number of major grid sections to find each section measurement.

Choose a transfer methodGrid, tiled print, tracing, or projection

A measured grid is dependable for geometric designs and scales cleanly to any size. A full-size tiled print reduces layout decisions but requires accurate printing and assembly. Projection and tracing can be useful when the setup is stable and the final measurements are verified.

Print and assemble a full-size patternCalibration, overlap, and alignment
  1. Generate the pattern at the exact finished size.
  2. Print at 100% or Actual Size.
  3. Measure the calibration square before assembling pages.
  4. Trim only the indicated margins.
  5. Align registration marks and overlapping lines.
  6. Tape pages into stable rows, then join the rows.
Verify the geometry before paintingCenters, symmetry, and intersections

Confirm the outside square, centerlines, major grid, repeated points, matching diagonals, and smallest subdivisions. Measure related points from the same reference edge so rounding errors do not accumulate.
